How to Clear Wax From the Ear

How to Clear Wax From the Ear - Earwax is beneficial to the ear because it traps dirt and foreign particles and prevents them from reaching the eardrum. Sometimes earwax can build up in the ear. It may harden and become trapped inside the ear. If the hardened wax presses up against the eardrum, it can cause hearing loss and ringing in the ear. Wax buildup can usually be treated at home and does not require the care of a doctor.

How to Clear Wax From the Ear

Step 1

Place a few drops of mineral oil in the ear canal. Use an eyedropper to carefully drop the mineral oil into the ear to help soften the wax, says the Mayo Clinic. Repeat once a day for up to five days.

Step 2

Irrigate the ear. Buy an at-home earwax removal kit that includes a rubber bulb syringe. Fill the syringe with warm water, then squeeze the water into the ear. Tip your head over the sink to remove the water and excess wax from the ear. Repeat once a day for several days until all excess wax is removed.

Step 3

Dry the ear with a clean towel. Do not use cotton swabs or your finger to wipe out the ear, says ear, nose and throat doctor Douglas Hoffman M.D., Ph.D. Cotton swabs can push the wax farther down into the ear canal.

Step 4

Consult a doctor. If you are unable to remove the wax on your own, a doctor can use a syringe or a curette, a curved instrument designed to protect the eardrum, to remove the wax.

Tips and Warnings

  • Rinse your ear out in the shower with water daily to help reduce ear wax buildup.
  • Do not stick foreign objects into your ear to dislodge the hardened wax.
